J1772 to Tesla Adapter Guide (2026): Which Direction You Need, Charging Speed and Compatibility

Quick answer: There are two different adapters. A J1772-to-Tesla adapter lets a Tesla (or any NACS-port EV) charge at the common J1772 Level 2 stations found at malls, hotels and workplaces; Tesla includes one with new U.S. vehicles. A Tesla-to-J1772 adapter (also called NACS-to-J1772) works the other way: it lets a J1772 car such as a Chevy Bolt, Ioniq 5 or Mustang Mach-E use Tesla Wall Connectors and Tesla destination chargers. Both are for AC Level 2 charging only; neither works at Superchargers.

Which Adapter Do You Need?

Your car's port The charger's plug Adapter you need
Tesla / NACS J1772 (most public Level 2) J1772-to-Tesla (NACS) adapter
J1772 / CCS1 Tesla Wall Connector or destination charger Tesla-to-J1772 (NACS-to-J1772) adapter
CCS1 Tesla Supercharger (DC fast) NACS-to-CCS1 DC adapter (different product; see our NACS adapter guide)

Do Teslas Come With a J1772 Adapter?

Yes. New Teslas sold in the U.S. normally include an SAE J1772 adapter, usually in the glovebox, frunk or charging pouch. If you bought a used Tesla, check that the previous owner left it with the car. Many owners buy a spare to keep in the car while the original stays with a home charger.

Tesla-to-J1772 Adapters for Non-Tesla EVs

If you drive a J1772 or CCS1 car, a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter lets you use a friend's Tesla Wall Connector, hotel Tesla destination chargers, or your own NACS home charger. A popular compact option is the Lenz NACS to J1772 Gen 2 adapter.

Note: some Tesla destination chargers are set to work only with Teslas, and Superchargers need a DC adapter, not a J1772 adapter.

How Fast Is Charging Through a J1772 Adapter?

The adapter does not slow charging by itself; the station and your car's onboard charger set the speed. Most public J1772 stations deliver about 6–11 kW (roughly 20–40 miles of range per hour). Make sure the adapter's amp rating meets or exceeds the station's output, especially if you plan to use 48A home chargers.

How to Choose a J1772 or Tesla Adapter

  • Direction: Match your car's port to the charger's plug using the table above.
  • Amp rating: 40–48A or higher for home Level 2 chargers; check the label.
  • Safety listing: Look for UL or ETL certification and a temperature sensor.
  • Locking: A latch or lock that keeps the adapter attached to the car or the charger handle so it is not left behind.
  • Weatherproofing: An IP rating if you charge outdoors.

How to Use a J1772-to-Tesla Adapter

  1. Attach the adapter to the J1772 charger handle until it clicks.
  2. Open your Tesla's charge port (button on the handle, touchscreen or app).
  3. Plug the adapter into the car and start the session on the station or its app.
  4. When finished, stop the session, unlatch the handle and remove the adapter from the J1772 handle so you do not leave it behind.

Charging at Home With a J1772 Charger and a Tesla

If you own both a Tesla and a J1772 EV, a J1772 home charger plus the Tesla's included adapter can charge both cars. Or choose a NACS charger and use a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter for the other car. Browse EV chargers for home in both connector types.

J1772 to Tesla Adapter FAQ

Do Teslas come with a J1772 adapter?

New Teslas delivered in the U.S. normally include one. Used Teslas may not, so check before you buy.

Can I use a J1772 adapter at a Tesla Supercharger?

No. Superchargers are DC fast chargers. Non-Tesla EVs need an approved NACS-to-CCS1 DC adapter, and only where Tesla has opened Supercharger access to that brand.

What is the difference between a J1772-to-Tesla and a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter?

J1772-to-Tesla lets a Tesla use J1772 stations. Tesla-to-J1772 lets a J1772 car use Tesla's AC chargers. They are not interchangeable.

Does a J1772 adapter slow down charging?

No, as long as the adapter is rated for the station's current. Charging speed is set by the station and your car's onboard charger.

Is a third-party Tesla-to-J1772 adapter safe?

Choose one with UL or ETL certification, a temperature sensor and an amp rating at or above your charger's output, and inspect the pins for damage regularly.
