NEMA 14-50 adapter for the Tesla Mobile Connector

Your Tesla Mobile Connector can charge from far more than a regular wall outlet. With the right Tesla NEMA adapter, the same cable plugs into a dryer outlet, an RV outlet or a 240V garage outlet, and can charge more than five times faster than a standard household plug.

Quick answer: Match the adapter to the outlet you already have. A NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 adapter gives the fastest Mobile Connector charging (32A, about 30 miles of range per hour on a Model 3). A 14-30 or 10-30 dryer-outlet adapter gives 24A (about 22 miles per hour). A 5-15 or 5-20 adapter on a regular 120V outlet adds only 3–4 miles per hour.

What Is a Tesla NEMA Adapter?

A Tesla NEMA adapter is the short plug on the wall end of the Tesla Mobile Connector. The Mobile Connector box and cable stay the same; you swap only the adapter to fit a different outlet. Each adapter also tells the Mobile Connector which outlet it is plugged into, so the car draws a safe current for that outlet automatically.

Most Tesla Mobile Connector kits come with a NEMA 5-15 adapter (standard 120V outlet). Some kits have also included a NEMA 14-50 adapter. Every other outlet type needs its own adapter.

Tesla NEMA Adapter Chart: Amps, kW and Miles per Hour

Maximum charging speed with the Tesla Mobile Connector, by adapter. Range-per-hour figures are Tesla's published estimates for Model 3 and Model Y.

Adapter Outlet type Volts Max amps Max kW Model 3 mi/hr Model Y mi/hr
NEMA 14-50 4-prong RV / EV outlet 240V 32A 7.7 kW 30 29
NEMA 6-50 3-prong welder / EV outlet 240V 32A 7.7 kW 30 29
NEMA 14-30 4-prong dryer outlet (newer homes) 240V 24A 5.7 kW 22 21
NEMA 10-30 3-prong dryer outlet (older homes) 240V 24A 5.7 kW 22 21
NEMA 6-20 240V 20A outlet 240V 16A 3.8 kW 15 14
NEMA 6-15 240V 15A outlet 240V 12A 2.8 kW 11 10
NEMA 5-20 120V 20A outlet (T-slot) 120V 16A 1.9 kW 4 4
NEMA 5-15 Standard household outlet 120V 12A 1.4 kW 3 3

Every adapter's current is 80% of the outlet's breaker rating, which is the limit for continuous loads like EV charging. For example, 80% of a 50A circuit is 40A, but the Mobile Connector tops out at 32A, so the 14-50 adapter runs at 32A.

How to Identify Your Outlet

  • NEMA 14-50: four holes: two straight hot blades, a wider neutral blade and a round ground. Common in RV parks and garages wired for EVs. Usually on a 50A breaker.
  • NEMA 6-50: three holes: two horizontal blades and a round ground. Common for welders. Usually on a 50A breaker.
  • NEMA 14-30: four holes, smaller than a 14-50. The standard dryer outlet in homes built since the late 1990s. 30A breaker.
  • NEMA 10-30: three holes, two angled blades and an L-shaped neutral, no ground. The dryer outlet in many older homes. 30A breaker.
  • NEMA 5-20: looks like a normal outlet, but one slot has a sideways "T". 20A breaker.
  • NEMA 5-15: the standard two-blade household outlet with a round ground. 15A breaker.

Not sure? Check the breaker size printed on the switch in your panel for that circuit, and match it to the chart above.

Which Tesla NEMA Adapter Should You Buy?

Best overall: NEMA 14-50 adapter

If you have a 14-50 outlet, or are adding one, this is the adapter to get. It gives the Mobile Connector's full 32A. Planning a new outlet? Read our NEMA 14-50 outlet guide for breaker, wire and cost.

Best for using an existing dryer outlet: NEMA 14-30 or 10-30

Many homes already have a 30A dryer outlet in the garage or laundry room. A 14-30 or 10-30 adapter turns it into a 24A Level 2 charger with no electrician visit. Just remember that you cannot run the dryer and charge at the same time on the same outlet.

Best for road trips and RV parks: NEMA 14-50

RV campgrounds commonly offer 14-50 outlets, so a 14-50 adapter in the frunk means you can charge at full Mobile Connector speed at many campgrounds.

Best for shops and garages with a welder outlet: NEMA 6-50

Same 32A speed as the 14-50, for garages that already have a 3-prong 6-50 welder outlet.

Best for light daily driving: NEMA 5-20

If your garage outlet is a 20A circuit with a T-slot, a 5-20 adapter adds about 33% more speed than the standard 5-15 adapter. It is still Level 1, so it suits low daily mileage.

Tesla NEMA Adapter vs. a Wall Charger

Mobile Connector + NEMA adapter Level 2 wall charger
Max speed Up to 32A (7.7 kW) Up to 48A (11.5 kW) on a 60A circuit
Cost Adapter only, if you have the outlet Charger plus installation
Portable Yes, take it on trips No (plug-in models can move with an outlet)
Best for Most daily driving, travel, renters Long commutes, two EVs, fastest home charging

For most drivers, 32A overnight adds well over 200 miles in 8 hours, which is more than enough. If you want faster charging or a permanent setup, see our best home EV chargers.

Safety Rules for Tesla NEMA Adapters

  • Do not use a regular extension cord between the outlet and the adapter. Our EV charger extension cord guide explains why.
  • Do not stack adapters (for example, a 14-50 adapter plugged into a dryer-to-RV converter). The Mobile Connector then thinks it is on a bigger circuit than it is.
  • Check that the adapter fits snugly. A loose, old or worn outlet can heat up under a long, heavy load. Replace worn outlets with a quality receptacle.
  • Watch for heat. If the plug or outlet gets hot to the touch, stop charging and have an electrician check the outlet.
  • Make sure the adapter fits your Mobile Connector generation. Gen 1 adapters do not fit Gen 2 Mobile Connectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest Tesla NEMA adapter?

The NEMA 14-50 and NEMA 6-50 adapters are the fastest. Both let the Tesla Mobile Connector charge at its 32A maximum, about 7.7 kW, or around 30 miles of range per hour on a Model 3.

Can I charge my Tesla from a dryer outlet?

Yes. Use a NEMA 14-30 adapter for a 4-prong dryer outlet or a NEMA 10-30 adapter for an older 3-prong one. Either charges at 24A, about 22 miles of range per hour on a Model 3.

Does the Tesla Mobile Connector come with adapters?

Most kits include a NEMA 5-15 adapter for standard outlets, and some have included a 14-50 adapter. Other outlet types need a separately purchased adapter.

Is a 14-50 adapter enough, or do I need a wall charger?

For most drivers, a 14-50 adapter is enough. At 32A it can add more than 200 miles overnight. A wall charger makes sense for long daily commutes, two EVs, or if you want up to 48A.

Do Tesla NEMA adapters work on non-Tesla EVs?

The adapters fit only the Tesla Mobile Connector. A non-Tesla EV can use a Tesla Mobile Connector only through a separate NACS-to-J1772 adapter and only where the vehicle and equipment support it. Most non-Tesla owners are better off with a J1772 portable or wall charger.

Final Takeaway

The best Tesla NEMA adapter is the one that matches an outlet you already have. Use a 14-50 or 6-50 adapter for the full 32A, a 14-30 or 10-30 to put a dryer outlet to work, and a 5-20 for a quick upgrade over a standard plug. Never use extension cords or stacked adapters, and if a plug gets hot, stop and call an electrician.
